The American life expectancy decreased from 77 to 76.4 years in 2021, federal data reported Thursday. This brings the U.S. figures back to the levels of 1996, signifying that the medical breakthroughs achieved in the last 25 years have been nullified, according to Dr. Steven Woolf, professor of family medicine and population health at Virginia Commonwealth University.
For men, life expectancy decreased by eight months, while women experienced a seven months drop. This decrease was seen across all age categories over the age of one.
Though the rate of decline was less extreme than in 2020, Woolf stated the 2021 dip was worse due to its arrival after the 17% decrease of the previous year.
