Starting July 1, 2024, the U.S. introduced a game-changing rule that could impact millions of workers’ paychecks and work-life balance. The federal government has expanded overtime protections, aiming to benefit around 1 million salaried employees immediately, with the potential to impact about 4 million by 2025. This new rule mandates that employees earning under a certain salary threshold now qualify for overtime pay—meaning they get one-and-a-half times their regular pay for hours worked beyond the standard 40-hour workweek.

Previously, the salary limit to qualify for overtime exemption was set at $35,568 per year. This amount has now been raised to $43,888. In essence, if you’re making less than this threshold, you should receive overtime pay for extra hours. But that’s not all—this threshold will rise again on January 1, 2025, to $58,656, widening the net to include even more workers.

This overhaul in overtime laws is one of the largest expansions seen in recent times. The aim? To enhance middle-class income and ensure workers aren’t exploited by being overworked and underpaid. The Department of Labor argues that previous salary thresholds hadn’t kept pace with rising wages, diminishing their effectiveness in protecting workers’ real income.
