Outback Steakhouse fans were left scratching their heads as the parent company, Bloomin’ Brands, announced the closure of 41 underperforming locations across its portfolio, including Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Bonefish Grill, and Fleming’s. The closures primarily affected Outback Steakhouses, reflecting a difficult decision driven by declining sales, dwindling foot traffic, and the impracticality of making necessary financial investments to revamp aging locations. Bloomin’ Brands CEO David Deno pointed out that many of these restaurants operated under leases dating back to the ’90s and early 2000s, making them less adaptable to modern market demands.
Although Bloomin’ Brands didn’t disclose the specific restaurants affected, reports revealed closures in states like Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Hawaii for Outback. Bonefish Grill saw closures in New Jersey and Virginia, and Carrabba’s experienced shutdowns in New York.
