Intuit’s recent survey unveiled a glaring gap in financial education for high school students across the United States. Despite a resounding 85% expressing interest in learning about personal finance in school, many lack access to such crucial courses. Surprisingly, even though 81% of students attempt to discuss financial matters with their parents, parents often feel ill-equipped for these conversations, mirroring the national trend of low financial literacy rates among adults.
Dave Zasada, VP of education and corporate responsibility at Intuit, highlighted the disconnect between students’ eagerness to learn and the limited resources available. This void in financial education leaves many students grappling with basic financial concepts like stocks, bonds, retirement, and taxes. Moreover, their top concerns revolve around wealth accumulation, saving strategies, and debt avoidance – essential skills for navigating the complexities of adulthood.
While schools and parents struggle to bridge this educational gap, a surprising trend emerges: a notable portion of students turn to social media for financial guidance despite the uncertainty of the accuracy of the information they find. Recognizing this urgent need for accessible financial education, Intuit has launched a free platform offering comprehensive courses on personal and entrepreneurial finance, totaling 150 hours of content. This initiative aims not only to impart knowledge but also to foster confidence and capability in students to make informed financial decisions.
