Costco Members Can Bring Guests Along, But There’s A Catch | TastingTable
Costco has long been known for its value-packed memberships, but if you’ve been on the fence about joining, here’s a heads-up: they’re hiking their membership fees for the first time since 2017. Now, even if you don’t have a Costco card yourself, you can still tag along with a friend or family member who does. Sounds sweet, right? Well, there’s a catch. As a guest, while you can roam the aisles and drool over all those bulk bargains, you’re not allowed to make most purchases unless you have your own membership.
Costco’s guest policy allows members to bring their kids and up to two adult guests into the warehouse. It doesn’t say how many children you can get—so you can pack the minivan—but you’ll need to watch them the entire time. There are no free-range kiddos here, even in the food court! The same goes for your adult guests; they can check out all the goods, but when it’s time to swipe that Costco card, only the member can do so. It’s all about keeping the system fair—Costco wouldn’t want non-members scoring all the deals without ever paying for a membership.
Now, there is a little-known loophole: if you live in one of 14 states, including California, Texas, or New York, non-members can buy liquor at Costco. Yep, the rules are different when it comes to booze. But even then, you’ll either need a member with you or get yourself a Costco Shop Card to make it through the door.
Even if non-members can’t buy most items, there are workarounds. For example, if you’re visiting Costco as a guest, you can hand the member your shopping list and have them buy it for you—pay them back later! Costco doesn’t have any rules against this. And while you’re there, feel free to indulge in all the samples scattered throughout the store. You may not be able to buy everything you see, but Costco’s free samples are fair game for everyone!
On top of that, members can also treat their guests to delicious, budget-friendly food court items. So, even if you’re not swiping your card at checkout, you can still leave Costco with a belly full of pizza and a smile on your face……….[read more]
