Inside Steve Ballmer’s $2 billion playground for LA Clippers fans | FastCompany
Steve Ballmer, the former Microsoft CEO and current owner of the Los Angeles Clippers is on a mission to create the ultimate basketball experience with the Intuit Dome, the team’s new arena set to open in 2024. Ballmer’s vision combines intimacy, comfort, and innovation to make it a “basketball mecca.” The dome’s design results from extensive collaboration and research, not just catering to Ballmer’s preferences but aiming to enhance the overall fan experience.
The Intuit Dome begins with an 80,000-square-foot outdoor plaza featuring a regulation-size basketball court, an amphitheater-style seating structure, a bar and restaurant, and a retail space for the Clippers’ first flagship team store. Ballmer’s preference for fans to be close to the action inside the arena led to unique seating arrangements, including subterranean luxury boxes called cabanas and various suites with different experiences.
One of the standout features is “the Wall,” inspired by European football stadiums, offering an uninterrupted grandstand seating area for 4,500 fans. The dome makes even the “worst” seats comfortable, with ample legroom and great sight lines. Moreover, it aims to keep fans engaged in their seats through innovative technology like customized seat controllers and interactive LED laser pointers.
However, Ballmer’s obsession with enhancing the fan experience goes beyond the seating arrangements. The dome will have an abundance of toilets to eliminate waiting times, 31 kitchens throughout the building for quick and convenient food service, and 199 countdown clocks to keep fans informed about game start times.
The Intuit Dome is not just about basketball; it’s designed to be eco-friendly, carbon-free, and a community hub. It will operate sustainably, provide space for community events, and offer opportunities for local kids to play basketball.
