Another study on Glassdoor confirms the tension, with 74% of Amazon employees reevaluating their career paths, either within the company or elsewhere. Experts have weighed in, speculating that these stricter office policies might be a way to cut staff without the financial and reputational costs of layoffs. It’s a clever strategy but risky, as it could push talent out the door and into the arms of more flexible companies.
On Amazon’s internal Slack channels, especially in groups like “remote advocacy” with over 30,000 members, conversations reveal dissatisfaction with the new policy. Employees have created and shared surveys aimed at giving leadership a better understanding of the negative effects this change might have. Their goal? Get Andy Jassy and the higher-ups to reconsider before the five-day office grind kicks in for good.
This isn’t the first time Amazon employees have voiced their concerns. Back in February 2023, a memo pushing for three days in the office sparked a six-page rebuttal from workers, but leadership stood firm. In his latest memo, Jassy noted that the hybrid model has already shown benefits, like smoother collaboration and stronger company culture, which only deepened their belief in the power of in-person teamwork.
