In the world of grocery giants, Kroger and Albertsons are making headlines with a massive $24.6 billion merger that’s shaking up their fueling stations. Together, they run around 1,408 fueling stations across the U.S., but if the deal gets the green light later this year, about 10% of these stations will be handed over to C&S Wholesale Grocers. This move is all part of the strategy to ensure the merger gets past regulatory hurdles.
A recent report from Dow Jones Newswires, analyzed by OPIS (Oil Price Information Service), highlights the details of this divestiture. Most of the gas stations in question are tied to Albertsons-owned Safeway stores. If the merger goes through, around 20% of Safeway’s gas stations—147 in total—will be sold off. Safeway’s stations, known for offering gas prices that are about 21 cents lower than the market average, are scattered across 13 states and D.C., with the biggest impacts in Washington, Colorado, and Arizona.
Safeway will lose 108 of its 289 stations, but other brands like QFC, Tom Thumb, and Mariano’s will also see some of their stations divested. Despite these changes, Kroger assures that no stores or fuel centers will close and all employees will keep their jobs. C&S Wholesale Grocers, who will take over the divested stations, has a solid track record in operating fuel centers and is expected to manage the transition smoothly.
