Best Buy lays off hundreds of store employees as shopping trends shift | CNBC

Recently, Best Buy announced that it’s laying off hundreds of store workers nationwide. This move comes as the company sees a shift in how customers shop, with more people buying online and a decrease in consumer electronics sales.

Best Buy isn’t sharing the exact number of layoffs, but this change is part of their strategy to adapt to new shopping behaviors. They’re planning to hire thousands of customer-facing employees and invest in growing areas like their Totaltech membership program and health business. It’s all about evolving their stores and experiences to match what customers want today.

As of January, Best Buy had over 90,000 employees in the U.S. and Canada, down from nearly 125,000 in early 2020. This reduction reflects the changing landscape of retail, especially in the consumer electronics sector.

The overall job market in the U.S. is still strong, with a low unemployment rate of 3.5%. However, retailers like Best Buy are being cautious. People are spending less on things like electronics and more on necessities due to inflation. They’re also starting to spend more on services like travel and dining out.

During the pandemic, Best Buy saw a surge in sales of items like laptops and home theater systems. But these are big-ticket items that people don’t buy often. Meanwhile, digital sales have become a significant part of Best Buy’s business, with about a third of their U.S. sales coming from online in the last fiscal year.

Despite the growth in online sales, Best Buy’s physical stores are still crucial. CEO Corie Barry noted that over 40% of online sales are picked up in stores. This shows how Best Buy is balancing its online and in-store experiences to meet changing customer needs…………..full-loaf-600x400-1-e1700879832480 Best Buy lays off hundreds of store employees as shopping trends shift | CNBC[read more]

Best Buy can utilize physical stores as experiential hubs for product demonstrations, tech support, and same-day pickups. Integrating digital tools like virtual reality and interactive displays enhances customer engagement, providing a tactile experience that online shopping can’t replicate.
