Bimbo Bakeries USA, a major player in the bread and bun baking industry, announced the closure of its plant in Bellevue, Nebraska, by early July. This decision impacts approximately 172 employees and is part of the company’s strategic evaluation of its manufacturing network. BBU said the Bellevue facility was deemed unsuitable for their growth plans, prompting the production shift to other plants within their network.
Marco Espinoza, senior director of regional operations at BBU, expressed the difficulty of this decision, acknowledging the dedication of the Bellevue bakery team and its ties to the community. However, after thorough analysis, it became clear that the plant lacked the necessary infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities to remain competitive. This closure marks the third shutdown by BBU in Nebraska over the past seven years, following closures in Hastings and South Sioux City in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
BBU’s operations span the United States, with 53 bread and cake plants listed in the 2024 Directory & Buyers Guide.
