It’s been a quiet few months for animated movies, but “Kung Fu Panda 4” just karate-chopped its way into theaters, making a big splash in the box office.
After a three-month drought of animated films, “Kung Fu Panda 4” has swooped in, seizing the opportunity with little competition for family audiences. The film, produced by Universal, raked in a whopping $19.4 million on its opening day, marking the most vital debut for the franchise since the original in 2008. With a budget of $85 million, relatively modest compared to its predecessors, the film is already showing signs of success with positive reviews and an impressive “A-” Cinema Score from audiences.
The story continues with Jack Black voicing the beloved Po, who now faces a new villain, a chameleon sorceress. The film also welcomes back familiar voices and introduces new ones like Awkwafina, Viola Davis, and Ke Huy Quan. “Kung Fu Panda 4” is expected to dominate the box office until it faces competition from Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” in two weeks.
Meanwhile, “Dune: Part Two” holds firm in second place. Despite a 62% drop from its opening day, the sci-fi epic is still performing remarkably well, surpassing the total domestic gross of its 2021 predecessor. Thanks to stellar reviews and a preference for premium large-format screenings, “Dune: Part Two” is expected to continue its successful run.
In other news, Lionsgate’s horror flick “Imaginary” and Angel Studios’ “Cabrini,” a film about a 19th-century Catholic missionary, are also making their mark. “Imaginary” is projected to earn around $10 million, while “Cabrini” is expected to bring in $7 to $8 million, buoyed by an “A” Cinema Score.
