A report from MoffettNathanson reveals that the number of Americans subscribing to cable TV has plummeted to just 34 million in the third quarter of 2023. This is a stark contrast to the heyday of cable TV in 2002 when a whopping 67 million Americans were hooked. The decline has been steady and unrelenting, driven in part by the rise of satellite services, TelCos, and streaming platforms, all chipping away at cable TV’s once-mighty subscriber base.
Notably, satellite services like DIRECTV and DISH are also feeling the pinch, with their subscriber numbers dropping from 24 million in 2014 to 15 million by the end of the third quarter in 2023. In total, cable and satellite TV companies have lost a staggering 42 million subscribers since their respective peaks.
