Community colleges have long been known as an affordable pathway to postsecondary education, offering training programs for in-demand jobs like electricians and healthcare aides. However, recent years have seen a decline in community college enrollment, which has only intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the labor market’s strength and the demand for bachelor’s degree jobs have played a role in this decline, the consequences could be significant.

Enrollment at community colleges dropped from around 11 million students in 2010 to 6.7 million in the 2021-2022 school year. If enrollment continues to decline, employers may struggle to find qualified talent, which could lead to reduced services and even job consolidation.

Some community colleges are considering mergers with other institutions to address declining enrollment and financial challenges. For example, in Connecticut, 12 community colleges merged to form “Connecticut State Community College” to save money and improve educational options………full-loaf-600x400-1-e1700879832480 Community college enrollment is down.
