Community college enrollment is down. Here’s what will happen to workers and the US economy if it doesn’t come back

Community colleges have long been known as an affordable pathway to postsecondary education, offering training programs for in-demand jobs like electricians and healthcare aides. However, recent years have seen a decline in community college enrollment, which has only intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the labor market’s strength and the demand for bachelor’s degree jobs have played a role in this decline, the consequences could be significant.

Enrollment at community colleges dropped from around 11 million students in 2010 to 6.7 million in the 2021-2022 school year. Although there has been a recent uptick in enrollment, it’s still below pre-pandemic levels. This decline raises concerns about potential labor shortages in industries that rely on community college graduates, such as healthcare, food services, and truck driving.

Furthermore, as the job market increasingly demands workers with higher education levels, community colleges may face challenges in meeting the demand for skilled labor in these industries. If enrollment continues to decline, employers may struggle to find qualified talent, which could lead to reduced services and even job consolidation.

Colleges in workforce development can work together with educational institutions, businesses, and policymakers to promote enrollment by developing relevant curriculum based on specific skill requirement for businesses, they can also offer apprenticeships and internships for any enrolling student.
