Gen Z loves self-checkout because it makes shoplifting easy | Fortune

In today’s tech-savvy shopping landscape, Gen Z and millennial consumers are changing the game, with a particular fondness for self-checkout kiosks. According to a recent survey by Avery Dennison, more than half of Gen Z and millennial respondents expressed that a self-checkout option would influence their choice of retailer, compared to only 41% of Gen X and 30% of Baby Boomers. The appeal for younger generations lies in the speed and convenience of self-checkout, as it eliminates the need to wait in long lines or interact with others.

However, there’s a surprising twist in this story. A LendingTree survey revealed that a significant number of Gen Z shoppers, about 31%, have admitted to shoplifting from self-checkout aisles, compared to 15% of shoppers overall. 46% of Gen Z participants mentioned plans to steal the most expensive item in their cart, while 37% intended to pilfer basics like food and water. This shoplifting trend poses challenges for retailers like Walmart, Costco, and Wegmans, who have been cutting down on self-checkout kiosks due to concerns about intentional theft.

The conundrum for retailers is clear: while self-checkout provides convenience, it also presents a risk for shoplifting, impacting their bottom line. This begs the question of whether self-checkout terminals are worth the risk, especially when considering the increasing spending power of Gen Z consumers……….full-loaf-600x400-1-e1700879832480 Gen Z loves self-checkout because it makes shoplifting easy | Fortune[read more]

they could add more cameras to the self-checkout line so that young people could still have the convince of shopping quickly. Another option would be to add security by the doors or employees around self checkout to supervise the people scanning the items.

they can add more security and thresholds too keep the trend of stealing at bay with the added fear of getting caught making people uncomfortable with the thought of getting away with stealing

Reciept checks have always been a thing i don’t understand how this could happen in the first place. More security should be provided at the self checkout such as employees walking around or security cameras implemented on top of or in the self checkout. For the security cameras it would be easier if it made consumers show what they were scanning before they scanned it as well as matching it up to what’s picking up on the computer.

if stores were so concerned about shoplifting and people stealing than they would add more security and cameras near the self-checkout line so that if they had any concerns, they could pull evidence. I think that they can also add more receipt checks. Having this would cancel the amount of people who could get away with shoplifting

Have surveillance at or above the scanner. Beepers are also a great way to minimize theft.

Companies can provide convenience while safeguarding their inventory to young consumers by adding cameras and AI that watch the feeded data for any violations or problems and if so a employee can get a alert and address the situation.

they could do what Walmart is doing and have someone check your receipt or they can have security at the self-checkout to prevent anyone from stealing but still allowing them to have access to self-checkout.

The solution seems dimple all they really have to do is just add more cameras over the self check out and have more guards watching over people.

They can have one employee per self-checkout and that person can revise the customer’s order through a tablet and make sure the person checking out is not stealing. another thing you can do is completely remove the self-checkout lane and go back to having to go with a cashier.

Retailers can add balance to self checkout while keeping shoplifting to a minimum by have worker watch or check receipts, they could install cameras and a scan system where it can read if someone skipped a scan or snuck an item.

The way retailers in provide convenient while still preventing shoplifting is by increasing security. For example, cameras will do excellent, as well as scales on the side of the self check out to make sure the amount of items that are there are also scanned.

Businesses can balance convenience with younger generations by hiring more employees. They can hire and employee to watch over a couple of kiosks. Furthermore, businesses can add cameras to self-check out to make it obvious if you’re stealing.
