The confusion is further compounded by the recent elimination of affirmative action in college admissions, adding another layer of complexity to the application process.
The introduction of a new version of FAFSA has been particularly problematic, plagued by technical glitches and system errors that have prevented some families from submitting their applications. As a result, fewer high school seniors have completed their FAFSA forms compared to the previous year, potentially leaving many in limbo about their ability to afford college. In response, some colleges have extended their commitment deadlines, but the uncertainty remains a significant stressor for prospective students.
Standardized testing, a long-standing component of the college admissions process, is also in flux. While the pandemic led many schools to adopt test-optional policies, a shift back to requiring tests by some institutions has left students and counselors questioning the impact of opting out.
