Renowned director Sam Mendes has joined forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment for an ambitious project: four theatrical films about the legendary British supergroup, The Beatles. Set to offer a unique perspective from each band member, the project comes more than five decades after The Beatles disbanded and four decades following the tragic death of John Lennon. With the full cooperation of Apple Corps, the company founded by the band members, and the families of McCartney, Starr, Lennon, and Harrison, the films promise to encapsulate the full life stories and music rights of the Fab Four.
Music-themed films have demonstrated resilience at the box office, with recent successes such as Paramount’s Bob Marley: One Love and Taylor Swift’s concert film The Eras Tour, which grossed $261 million globally last year. Riding on this wave, Mendes aims to recapture the magic of The Beatles, with Sony financing and distributing the movie series worldwide in theaters, slated for release in 2027.
