San Diego Unified discusses plan to lay off 400-plus teachers, others at Tuesday meeting | NBC San Diego
The San Diego Unified School District is currently grappling with a significant financial challenge, facing a budget shortfall of $93.7 million. This situation has sparked concerns among teachers, parents, and the local community as they anticipate the impact of budget cuts.
The district has proposed a plan to lay off more than 430 employees in response to this shortfall. This plan was revealed in documents attached to the agenda for a district board meeting. The layoffs span various positions, from teachers and principals to police officers, custodians, and administrative roles. The district employs a unique method of calculating job cuts, which might seem confusing at first but is based on the part-time nature of many positions.
For instance, the district is considering reducing 27.985 English/reading/language arts teachers and 93.72 general-subject instructors at elementary schools. These fractional numbers reflect the part-time hours worked by these employees. The layoffs also include one principal, five associate principals, and 222.565 teachers.
The impact of these layoffs extends beyond the employees themselves, affecting their families and colleagues. Employees may sometimes be reassigned to different roles or schools based on their seniority. Those affected will be personally informed, and final layoff and reassignment notices will be sent out by May 15.
This isn’t the first time the San Diego Unified School District has faced such a situation. In 2017, over 950 teachers received preliminary layoff notices due to a $124 million budget shortfall, although later buyouts reduced the number of actual layoffs. In contrast, the district experienced a financial boost in 2020 due to COVID relief funds, which even allowed educators a significant pay raise.
With nearly 6,000 teachers and 13,559 employees, the district’s decision will substantially impact the local education system and community………..[read more]
