Sports Illustrated, a renowned sports journalism publication with a legacy spanning almost seven decades, is facing a turbulent period. Employees were recently notified that a “significant number, if not all,” of their jobs could be eliminated, as reported by the publication’s union. This news follows several years of challenges for Sports Illustrated under the stewardship of Arena Group, formerly known as The Maven.

The publication has changed hands multiple times, with Authentic Brands Group taking ownership in 2019, while The Arena Group held the publishing rights. In December 2023, The Arena Group’s board ousted Sports Illustrated CEO Ross Levinsohn to enhance the company’s operational efficiency and revenue. This shift in leadership, along with the termination of key executives, has left the future of Sports Illustrated uncertain.

Despite revoking the publishing license, The Arena Group intends to continue producing Sports Illustrated during ongoing discussions with Authentic Brands Group.
