The NYSE and Nasdaq markets are open every weekday — except for these stock market holidays.
In today’s fast-paced world of investing, trading stocks has become easier and more accessible than ever before, thanks to digital investment services like Fidelity, Schwab, and Robinhood. These platforms have transformed many of us into daily investors, and if you’re one of them, it’s essential to understand the schedule of the stock market holidays.
When we talk about the stock market being open or closed, we’re usually referring to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, the two largest stock exchanges in the world. Both of these exchanges operate from Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. However, there’s also something called extended-hours trading, which happens at lower volumes outside of regular market hours. Stock prices typically don’t fluctuate as much during these extended hours unless significant news impacts a particular stock.
In addition to extended hours, there are 10 stock market holidays during which the markets are closed, and three stock market half days when they close early at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time. These holidays are essential for investors to be aware of as they can affect trading strategies and decision-making.
