In a bold move to curb theft, Target is rolling out a new technology called TruScan across its U.S. stores. This innovative tool, designed for self-checkout kiosks, employs audiovisual technology to ensure that shoppers scan every item in their cart. If a shopper misses scanning an item, TruScan is programmed to alert them, aiming to reduce theft and improve the shopping experience. This initiative is part of Target’s broader strategy to enhance in-store security and efficiency, reflecting a growing trend among retailers to leverage technology in addressing challenges like theft and inventory management.

The introduction of TruScan follows Target’s decision to limit the number of items for self-checkout to 10 or less, promoting what they call the “Express Self-Checkout.” For those with more items, Target plans to open more traditional lanes, staffed by employees, to accommodate their needs. This dual approach underscores Target’s commitment to providing a seamless shopping experience while also implementing measures to prevent loss.

Target’s efforts to innovate come at a time when retail theft is a significant concern for many businesses. Dollar General, for instance, has taken a different route by removing self-checkout kiosks from 300 of its stores. These contrasting strategies highlight the diverse approaches retailers are taking to tackle the issue of theft, each leveraging technology and store policies in ways they believe will best serve their customers and protect their assets.

Amid these changes, Target continues to engage its customers with enticing deals, such as its annual Circle Week and the launch of its new paid loyalty program, Target Circle 360. These initiatives not only aim to enhance customer loyalty but also to create a more controlled and enjoyable shopping environment……….full-loaf-600x400-1-e1700879832480 Target's new self-checkout tech will warn you if you forgot to scan something | Quartz[read more]

The overall retail landscape and consumers influence is affected by this TruScan because it gives them the opportunity to checkout at the pace and comfort that they want. This is also a big improvement to the business sense when times when the store i packed people are able to go check their items out themselves which is giving more availability for more people. When other companies see that Target is adding these features it could cause others to want to add them too.

Technology like TruScan lets customers shop and scan at their own pace, so this would lead to a better environment in the shopping world. It would also protect the stores product and alert people that are trying to steal.

Truscan will impact consumers by increasing the efficiency of traffic in store. By making these check outs to 10 or less it will be harder for people to steal by hiding items. This means target has to worry less about petty theft. This will also benefit consumers because people with few items won’t be held up in line for long periods of time just to get 3 items in store. Furthermore, for people with large quantities of items they won’t need to scan it all on their own, but cashiers will. This will not only be more convenient for consumers but create more jobs.
