The real loss of shoplifting: Why America’s ‘great rip-off’ hurts everyone | New York Post

Shoplifting is often brushed off as a minor crime, with the assumption that stores can easily absorb the losses through insurance. However, this article argues that the issue runs deeper than mere theft. It contends that a widespread shoplifting problem is indicative of societal decline, pointing out how it leads to businesses abandoning areas en masse, contributing to an overall degradation of the community. The piece criticizes efforts by media outlets and liberal activists to downplay shoplifting, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the problem and its broader societal implications.

The author cites a study by the Council on Criminal Justice, noting a 16% increase in shoplifting incidents in the first half of 2023 compared to 2019. However, there’s a question raised about the exclusion of New York City, which experienced a significant 64% spike in shoplifting during the same period. Target’s decision to close three stores in response to theft and organized retail crime adds weight to the argument that the issue has tangible consequences for businesses and their viability.

Unchecked shoplifting not only leads to a rise in other crimes but also erodes faith in law and order, contributing to societal decay. Drawing on historical examples, the article suggests that addressing seemingly minor issues like shoplifting can have a positive ripple effect on larger societal problems. The underlying message is a call to take seriously the impact of small issues on the overall health of a community………full-loaf-600x400-1-e1700879832480 The real loss of shoplifting: Why America’s ‘great rip-off’ hurts everyone | New York Post[read more]

Addressing seemingly minor issues like shoplifting can actually contribute to the overall improvement of society in several ways. Firstly, it helps create a sense of security and order in the community. When businesses take steps to prevent and address shoplifting, it sends a message that they prioritize the safety and well-being of their customers. This can lead to a more positive and welcoming environment for everyone. By addressing shoplifting, businesses are able to protect their own interests and maintain profitability. Address stuff such as shoplifting allows more people and local business aware of what going on around them. Sometimes this leads to more security like cameras that capture everything around the store or building. Lead can lead to safer neighborhoods knowing that everything is being recorded and evidence if anything were to happen. So, businesses using cameras and other forms of security can protect the surrounding area.

Society is watered and grown from the actions of the people within it. If we engage in crime, even as “minor” as shoplifting, we are contributing to a hostile and unlawful society. Businesses of all kinds bring order to a community, in economy, in creating centers of hustle and bustle. However, not all stores can weather the shoplifting that may happen in major chains. Local businesses and otherwise might need to even close down due to the whim of individuals who simply can’t pay for luxuries or don’t want to do so. Such “minor” crimes are simply the beginning of decay, as said within the article. Everything starts small, but it is only a matter of time before it magnifies. To address crime at its root is to pull it out before it grows and deprives a community of its resources and morality.

Addressing issues like shoplifting increases awareness among more people and local businesses about their surroundings. Often, this prompts the implementation of additional security measures such as comprehensive surveillance cameras. This, in turn, contributes to safer neighborhoods by assuring residents that all activities are being monitored, providing evidence in case of any untoward incidents. Therefore, businesses employing cameras and other security measures play a role in safeguarding the surrounding area.

Addressing seemingly minor issues like shoplifting can contribute to the improvement of society by making it safer by having them increase security for the shoplifters. It can also help the store keep all their products and merchandise in the store. The business community plays the role of giving sense of security and order in a community by having strong security to keep shoplifters from stealing and having a set of rules in place for people to follow.
