A Farewell to Tradition: London’s Iconic Markets Prepare to Close
Two of London’s historic marketplaces, Smithfield Market and Billingsgate Market, are set to close their doors after centuries of operation. These iconic hubs for meat and fish trading will remain active until at least 2028. Still, the decision to shutter them stems from a shift in priorities by the City of London Corporation, which has dropped plans to relocate the markets to a combined site at Dagenham Dock. Instead, the corporation will seek Parliamentary approval to end its legal obligations to manage these markets.
Smithfield Market, a cornerstone of London’s trade since medieval times, has been in its current form for over 140 years, while Billingsgate Market, dating back to 1327, boasts a similarly rich history. Together, they’ve long served as vital arteries for London’s food supply, with Billingsgate moving 25,000 tonnes of fish annually and Smithfield handling over 100,000 tonnes of meat and other products each year. Despite their deep cultural and economic roots, skyrocketing construction costs, inflation, and other financial hurdles made their continued operation untenable.
Acknowledging the upheaval, the City of London Corporation has pledged financial support to traders at both markets, helping them transition to new premises. Chris Hayward, the corporation’s policy chairman, emphasized that this decision allows traders to establish sustainable, independent futures. The years-long timeline for the closures was set to allow traders time to adapt and strategize their next steps.
While these closures mark the end of an era, not everything is changing in London’s market scene. New Spitalfields Market, a major hub for fruits and vegetables, will remain open and unaffected by this decision.
