Retail giants like Walmart, Five Below, Target, and Dollar General are making strategic shifts in their self-checkout systems with a common goal: combating theft. Walmart, for instance, is removing self-checkout machines from select stores in Missouri and Ohio and replacing them with staffed lanes. Their decision stems from various factors, including feedback from customers and employees and local business needs. The aim is to enhance the in-store shopping experience by offering more personalized and efficient service.
Following suit, Five Below, with over 1,500 locations, is transitioning to associate-assisted checkout to curb theft, particularly in stores prone to “shrinkage,” industry jargon for lost or stolen items. CEO Joel Anderson announced this move during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, also mentioning the addition of receipt checking, extra staff, and heightened security measures.
Target, meanwhile, is limiting its self-checkout option to “express” lanes, allowing only small transactions. This shift reflects a broader retail landscape trend, as Neil Saunders of GlobalData explained. He notes that retailers are actively reevaluating self-checkout systems due to their vulnerability to theft, opting to reduce their presence or impose stricter regulations, as seen in Target’s case.
Dollar General is similarly scaling back on self-checkout, removing the option from 300 stores with the highest rates of merchandise loss. Additionally, they’re limiting self-checkout to transactions of five items or fewer while providing assisted checkout alternatives.
