Walmart, a retail giant, has announced the closure of all 51 of its Walmart Health clinics and the discontinuation of its telehealth operations. This decision came after the company found that the health center business was not sustainable, facing challenges in generating profit due to a difficult reimbursement environment and increasing operating costs. Similar struggles have been faced by other drugstore operators, such as Walgreens, which recently declared the closure of 160 VillageMD primary-care clinics.
In contrast, while closing some MinuteClinics, CVS remains committed to expanding its Oak Street Health primary-care clinic operations. Walmart had launched its Walmart Health centers in 2019, providing a wide range of medical and dental services, including primary care, urgent care, dental care, and behavioral health services. However, sustaining profitability proved elusive despite efforts to provide competitive pricing and comprehensive services.
Walmart plans to apply the lessons learned from this venture to its other health services, which include thousands of pharmacies and vision centers across the United States.
